Declining Population

Although Zoroastrianism was once the dominant religion in Ancient Persia, the persecution and some "barriers" to conversion has resulted in dwindling numbers of Zoroastrians globally. As of 2022, it is estimated that there are less than 200,000 Zoroastrians worldwide, with most living in India.

Population Statistics

India- an estimated 69,000 Zoroastrians as of 2019

Iran- an estimated 15,000 to 25, 271 Zoroastrians as of 2012

United States- an estimated 15,000 Zoroastrians as of 2012

Other countries with a small population of Zoroastrians (under 10,000) include:

Uzbekistan

Iraq

Canada

Tajikistan

United Kingdom

Azerbaijan

Australia

Conversion

In Zoroastrianism, simply put, conversion can be a controversial topic. Many Zoroastrian groups/sects (such as the Parsis) will generally not allow conversions to the faith. However, the Avesta never explicitly mentions that one can't convert to Zoroastrianism- only forced conversion of others is directly forbidden. That said, the vast majority of Zoroastrians today are born into the religion as an ethnic group.
