Avestan

Avestan: The Language

The Avesta was written in Avestan, an Old Iranian language. It is apart of the Indo- Iranian language family and is close to Vedic Sanskrit. The language was believed to be first recorded (in a written script) during the Sasanian period (224 CE to 620 CE) in Ancient Iran. The letters are written from right to left and the script is based on the Pahlavi script
